How Packaging Design Builds Shopper Trust and Confidence

Packaging does far more than protect the product inside. It is often a brand’s first chance to earn trust, show what it stands for and influences what ends up in the basket.

Whether someone is walking down a supermarket aisle or scrolling through an online store, they are surrounded by hundreds of choices. In that environment, packaging helps a product get noticed and gives shoppers a reason to feel confident about picking it.

So what makes packaging feel trustworthy?

First impressions matter

Shoppers notice packaging long before they read a product description.

Colour, typography, imagery and layout all shape how a product is perceived. A 2024 study in the International Journal of Food Science and Technology looked at how packaging design affects consumers' attention, product perception and willingness to buy.

The most effective packaging stands out without losing sight of the brand behind it. It helps shoppers recognise what they are looking for and feel sure about their decision.

Clarity builds confidence

Consumers want to know exactly what they are buying. Ingredients, allergens, product benefits and sustainability claims all need to be communicated clearly and accurately.

That matters because trust in this information is far from guaranteed. According to Euromonitor International, 53% of global consumers trust the information they see on labels, packaging and company websites. Credible communication is a real advantage.

A useful starting point is to ask three questions: can shoppers quickly identify the product, find the information that matters to them and understand what its claims mean? For example, a sustainability statement needs to make clear whether it refers to the product, the packaging or just one component.

When information is clear and correct, uncertainty fades. Decisions get easier, and customer relationships get stronger.

Consistency creates trust

Confidence grows through familiarity.

When colours, messaging, imagery and pack design stay consistent, shoppers can easily recognise a brand across ranges, retailers and channels. Research in the Journal of Product and Brand Management explores how packaging shapes brand image and the associations consumers form with a brand. The research highlighted how packaging provides value throughout the consumer experience, not just at the point of sale but also during later consumption, and emphasised the importance of practical and symbolic packaging elements.

Consistency gets harder to maintain as a portfolio grows. More products, more pack variations and more digital assets mean more places for mistakes. Even a small error, like an outdated image or a mismatch in product information, can cause confusion and damage brand experience and perception.

A confident launch nurtures consumer confidence

Behind every product people trust is a well-managed packaging process.

From initial designs and artwork through approvals, quality control, and final delivery, every stage matters. A mistake at any point can affect the finished product and, ultimately, how the shopper feels about it.

That means checking the details shoppers will actually encounter: does the pack show the approved product information? Does the online image match the version on the shelf? Have amendments been carried through to every relevant asset? These are the points where production accuracy meets shopper confidence.

If you're on board with what we've written in this article, then there are few areas that you could consider to ensure your packaging production process fills you with confidence.

  • Ensure your creative team and production partners are focused on the details and are able to capture them all on the packaging artwork.

  • Use specialist workflow management software (such as 360Orbit) to manage the end to end production process and keep tabs at every stage.

  • Agree and confirm the flow and responsibilities at every stage from briefing through production to amends, sign off and distribution with your internal team and production partner.

Shoppers' confidence starts with brands feeling confident in their own process.

It’s an approach we have put into practice, and Boots’ own team describes our work with them as “instrumental” in supporting their brand strategy. See how we protect trust at scale for Boots, then get in touch with us to see what we can do for your brand.
